Boycott 'The Golden Compass'

I don't know if any of you received the email about how 'The Golden Compass' is an anti-religion movie geared towards kids this Christmas season. But I did. And then I checked out Snopes before I passed the email along. Kari at Just Livin Large did a post a while back about all of the Christmas movies out there right now. She mentioned that she had heard some controversy about it but hadn't done any research yet. So of course, I told her all about it and thought I would share my findings with you as well. If you check the Snopes link you can read all about it.

But to sum up - DON'T GO SEE THIS MOVIE! How terrible that the movie industry thinks nothing of promoting a 'feel good Christmas movie' for kids when the origin of this movie is about the author's hatred of God. How can you hate something you don't believe exists??

I have always been passionate about God and my right to worship Him. But I love this country of ours and you have the right NOT to worship if you so choose. What I have a problem with is Hollywood masking atheism as a 'children's Christmas movie.' I don't mince words. I call a spade a spade when I see fit. If you want to create a movie based on your hatred for my God, that's your right. But then advertise the movie as it is. If you're so passionate about your belief or disbelief as it were, why are you hiding the premise of your story? Let me put it this way. If I ever wrote a screenplay about my love of God and my belief in Him, I would never market it as having agnostic or atheist undertones only to drop the 'bomb' on unsuspecting viewers during the movie. Ha-ha, gotcha! Nope, that's just not my style. I'm proud of what I believe and Who I believe in. Why hide it? I'd rather my movie flop at the box office than to compromise my integrity or beliefs for the sake of the almighty dollar.

So now you know the premise behind this story. I won't be seeing this movie and I will continue trying to persuade others from not seeing it. I do not want my hard earned dollar supporting this man. Because I know that I everything I have comes from God. And he doesn't believe in Him.

Blessing of the day: I know I'm blessed because my faith tells me so!

Good Morning Julie,
Wow, you said a mouthful there! AMEN and AMEN!!!! Thanks for the heads up about this movie. I haven't received any email about it. But I'm glad you warned me about it. We haven't been to a movie in a long time anyway due to budget funds. It is a shame that people will do this to our kids. It is just saddening. I'm like you, I would rather my movie flop, than not believing in OUR WONDERFUL GOD. This is such a great post. When you have time, drop by. I have 2 awards waiting on you. You will have to scroll down to the second post tho because blogger wasn't co-operating with me. Take care my friend and have a great Wednesday. May God Bless You and Yours.

Hugs,
Karen H.

My husband told me about this movie coming out. It sure didn't sound like anything I wanted to see. What is happening to our country when we let people do this type of thing?

I had heard this on Christian radio... I was so sad to hear Sam Elliot was in this! Very disappointing...

You know, I didn't even believe this when I first heard it. I thought Nicole Kidman would never be in such a hateful movie. What a shock to learn its all true. It upsets me each time I see it advertised on TV.

We don't go to movies.

Just about all of today's films, have an agenda. I prefer to make up my own mind on matters, and do not like mindlessly 'swallowing' the agenda of liberal film makers.

When I rent a film, I made a game of finding where the maker's agenda 'shows.' It's a "Gtcha!" moment, or moments. If one starts out with the agenda premise, it's amazing how many "Gotcha!" moments can be found in today's films.

Last night we rented and watched a DVD of a very old Hitchcock film "The Lady Vanishes." Not scary, like he later became. But we laughed at the 'ugly American' lines which were slipped in this! Wasn't Hitchcock American? Well, it was a Brit film and it had those lines in it. ,-)

Yes, the American war films made during WW2 were blatantly biased. The word is "blatantly." No effect was made to pull the wool over anyone's eyes. That is better 'in my book,' than the sneakiness of today. As you say about 'The Golden Compass.' Sneaky way of getting their point of view across. Ugh..

Wow, sorry for the rant.

Re: the comment made by 'Nancy'... "What is happening to our country when we let people do this type of thing?"

Dear Nancy, it is _our_ freedom to do/believe what _we_ want to, which allows these films to be made. All have the freedoms.

If we don't agree with or like any product, our best way to make our voice heard, is with our pocketbook. Do not pay money for anything you dislike.

Sad to say, profit is the only thing, which makes itself heard.

But not sad to say, if we realize this, we can use it! :-)

Julie...this is a good site for movie reviews:

we use it all the time...I don't think they reviewed the Golden Compass yet but I did hear it was written by an atheist.

Julie,
Yes, I've heard of this and have been spreading the word to our friends too.
The world is headed in some scary directions. Each step, however small, is a slide towards a slippery slope. We need to be diligent and aware of agendas.
We won't even go into our local video store anymore, all the movie covers are becoming so bad we can't let our kids wander and look.
Thanks for continuing to be a light, exposing the darkness.

Everyone, the movie controversy is also listed as TRUE (not a rumor) here:

I've heard the plan was to make it a cute movie that would make parents buy the books for their kids. Then the deed is done.

Julie, I got that email too and a friend of mine had already let her daughter read the books when I told her!! I didn't think of blogging about it, but I am so glad you did!!!

I want to adopt you as a sister because you are such a sweet friend!!! Have a great day!

Julie, I've also received a lot of e-mail concerning this movie. We can make a difference by NOT seeing it, and by spreading the word. You have to hit the producers in the pocketbook. The almighty dollar is what speaks to them.

Thank you for your thoughts on this movie. I find so many things that sneak up on us in this world. Childrens movies shouldn't be one of them. The shameless bid for money and profit makes me shake my head. The sneaky way folks do it makes me boil. You expressed your self eloquently & with out rancor. Thank you.

The local theater in our little hamlet is owned by Mormons and their choices are very carefully made. I doubt this movie will be in Sandpoint. We have had every animated movie ever made. The local playhouse however brings those movies that are somewhat on the edge to town. I want to see American Gangster...the Compass not so much simply because I don't like the genre and now with your info...blagghh

Thanks for letting us know,

My oldest son told me yesterday, "We can't see this movie because I heard that they kill God in it". How appalling! I'm so glad that you've spoken out about it. Thank you! Blessings..Polly (p.s. hope my "silent" posts haven't bothered you. I love talking with you)

I agree with you, Julie. And yes, I was tickled pink when I walked around the corner and found Milo laying there just as content as could be while the music played. :)
You are beautiful as well my dear, outside and most especially inside. Big hug.

Thank you Julie!

We haven't been to a movie theater in many a year! This type of movie, has kept us away. TV is also almost non-existent at our house! For the same reasons!

I read about the movie at Kari's.

Great post! Pat

Well, it should come as no surprise to you that I would probably enjoy this movie. But that does not take away from the fact that I agree with you wholeheartedly. You can't claim something to be a Christmas movie when it's not, anymore than you can claim it to be a Chanukah movie when it's not. This is obviously just another example of dollar signs outweighing ethics. The correct way of promoting this flick, or any of them that will be coming out this season, is as a fantasy movie. It's fantasy. Make believe. And while I may not consider myself a Christian who worships your God, I am hugely offended by people who would use your faith as a means to attract customers. That is just gross.

Wow, my 9 year old daughter read the book (YIKES) and has expressed interest in seeing the movie as it's been widely advertised on TV. Not now - thanks so much for letting us know - absolutely amazing that an author can do this so subtly. I had a good chat with my daughter about why she WON'T be seeing it and that was a good learning experience. Thanks for letting us in on this "secret"! Love your blog!

I haven't seen the movie but The Child did. So far she's still a Christian. And apparently the American Catholic bishops (whose movie rating website is an EXCELLENT resource, btw)didn't have a problem with it. Not to mention that if I had to jettison everything from my life that was created by an atheist or get rid of any friends who didn't believe, I think my life would be a lot less interesting.

If people don't want to go see the movie that's absolutely fine, of course, but I dunno...Harry Potter didn't make this entire generation a bunch of Satanists...sometimes the reality falls far short of the hype.

We are a Christian family and our boys attend a Christian school. My two young boys have an awesome Spiritual connection with Our Heavenly Father and their hearts were heavy when the school had informed them about the Golden Compass. It really saddens my heart to know the parents of the child actors in this movie allowed them to act in it. That is Satan at his best...Spiritual Warfare, and the fact is money is the root of all evil in this situation. It is either money or the paernts are athiests and do not allow them to have a voice. I am trying not to be judgemental, but I defend my Christianity, and without God in my life I am not complete. I pray for the parents and their children daily. Why involve the children they are the innocent here. May God Bless you and keep you.

In His Name
